VW California forums are full of prospective campervan owners asking for advice on which model would suit them best and there are as many ardent ‘Cali’ fans in favour of the Beach as there are of the Ocean. We spoke to Guy Vincent, California Specialist at Volkswagen Van Centre in Preston to ask his opinion, I’m going to give a diplomatic answer here and not plump for one or the other! What I do want to highlight are the reasons why buying a Volkswagen California, whichever model, is a very smart thing to do. Back to the Ocean v Beach battle; why the big debate? What is the difference between these two models and why does the discussion exercise the minds of so many campervan enthusiasts? Well the first thing to note is that this VW campervan is just as loved and makes its’ owners just as passionate as its iconic predecessor. It’s universally acknowledged as a fantastic piece of kit, and the truth is that both the Ocean and the Beach have ardent fans, so, it’s really not possible to make a mistake. Excellent build quality, lots of forethought and great design make this is a campervan for life, not just for Summer and whichever suits you best, you’ll find it changes your life in a very positive way. Since the outgoing Beach model, the Beach now features improvements including blinds for the front windows, a touchscreen camper-function control panel and engine upgrades. Both California Beach models come with the same engine choices for both the Tour and Camper, 150PS 7-speed DSG, however, the California Ocean comes with the additional option of 204PS , 199PS , 204PS 4MOTION and 199PS 4MOTION variants. First up is the Beach. The Beach slots in at the entry price point of the California line and come in two versions – the Beach Tour and the Beach Camper. The California Beach models are more MPVs with pop-up roof than fully equipped mobile getaways, but with the added flexibility to carry more people as a result. If opting for the Beach Tour, you’ll be able to seat five people as standard, with the option to increase to six or seven, while the Camper carries four as standard (same as existing California’s) with a fifth optional. The UK California Beach Camper variant, comes complete with a mini kitchen that folds out from the side panel and can be tucked away when not in used. There's no sink or fridge, unlike the California Ocean, but there is a single-burner gas stove and worktop. Those happy with just a sleeper van will be able to get a more capable people-hauler by opting for the Beach Tour. This is set up as a ‘day van’, with a smaller storage unit along the side of the van and no standard kitchen, instead complete with twin sliding side doors to make loading up passengers a breeze. True Beach lovers won’t mind the absence of a full kitchen at all; they prefer the flexible space this more minimalist interior gives them and are happy to cook outside. Beach fans may already have a pop-up tent and camping stoves, if not, they buy these along with a coolbox and they’re ready to rock and roll. Both Beach Camper and Tour , when the seats are folded down, provide a substantial double bed, providing comfy, cosy sleeping for 2 people or maybe even 3 if you have little people on-board. Another double bed is revealed, when you manually pop-up the roof and you very definitely get a comfy, snuggly, luxurious night’s sleep. With a picnic table and two chairs concealed in the boot lid and sliding doors, the added extra that most Beach buyers will be adding is the wind-out awning, just in case you need to hide from the thoroughly British showers or indeed keen in shade on sunny days. For lovers of the Beach the ability to be flexible on seating means their California can be used more as an MPV when it’s not being used as a campervan. For ocean lovers however, this is a cop-out! Find out more about the VW California Beach And so, into the Ocean If the Volkswagen California Beach Camper is a brilliant campervan, then the Volkswagen California Ocean is a simply fabulous Glampervan. Opt for a California ‘Ocean’ model – the true top-of-the range camper – and this time the pop-up roof glides up hydraulically at the touch of a button; and when you wake from your comfy slumbers, you can pop the kettle on and get the bacon frying, on the built-in hob. You can wash up after yourself, keep food and drink chilled in the fridge and store your clothes in the wardrobe. What’s the pay-off for all this added glamping-ness? Well the downstairs bed is narrower to accommodate the kitchen/wardrobe etc, but it’s still super-comfy and pocketed sprung mattress bringing home comforts to the road! In exchange for this narrower downstairs double, you not only get a kitchen, but also storage galore, a pull-out table and there’s still the option to configure your seating in different ways, just not up to 7 seats. Referred to by ardent VW campervan enthusiasts, as the ‘full-fat’ option, the ocean will take you anywhere, anytime; keep you warm and your food cold; offer a haven in bad weather and a hotel in warmer climes. On the outside the Ocean looks swish too with LED headlights and even double glazing in the rear cabin; there’s also state-of-the-art digital cockpit, rear-view camera system, climatronic three-zone automatic climate control and an auxiliary air heater. The California is the only campervan that’s completely manufactured by Volkswagen: the rest are made by specialist manufacturers of varying degrees of pedigree. Now we have the T6, the latest-generation Volkswagen Transporter, on which the VW California Ocean you see here is based. It may not look that different from the T5 that it’s replaced, but it’s meant a choice of cleaner, more fuel-efficient Euro 6 engines, all manner of safety enhancements and more. Indeed, Volkswagen lists some 6000 changes to the T6 over the T5. Some of the most significant in terms of safety include a Driver Alert System, Brake Assist, an Automotive Post-Collision Braking System and so on. In short, it’s the best VW Transporter to date: it’s more powerful, more economical, quieter, better equipped, sturdier and safer. Yes, it’s more expensive. But the overall dimensions remain exactly the same as those of the T5. In T6 guise, there are two flavours: Beach and Ocean. Here we have the latter and the higher-trim Ocean is a standard-bearer for the entire class of T6-based ’vans, and a great indicator of the characteristics you can expect when a carmaker turns its attention to campervan production. The furniture and mouldings are of superior quality. Volkswagen also retains the premium dashboard for its own product. Integral blinds for the side and rear windows, all-LED rear lights, twin chrome strips on the front grille (rivals just get the single ones) and other details are reminders that the Ocean is a cut above the rest of the fleet. It is by no means perfect, though. Practicality may not always have been at the forefront of its designers’ thoughts. The gas cylinder surrounded by the fresh water tank isn’t liked by everyone. And while overall storage is decent, it lacks the imaginative ideas that other converters can offer. Moreover, despite being able to call upon lots of optional extras, the majority of these focus on the base vehicle rather than enhancing the camping side of things. The conversion isn’t switched to right-hand drive, either; hence, the sliding door is on our offside (we appreciate its power latch, but that doesn’t compensate). The small, top-loading fridge is definitely a love-it/loathe-it item. In addition, interior lighting is acceptable, rather than generous. Nevertheless, the majority would agree that here is a campervan that is head-and-shoulders above its contemporaries. It needn’t cost more, either. Spec-for-spec comparisons actually favour the California – especially because the standard equipment includes clever features, for example, the electrically operated aluminium elevating roof, an outdoor table that is stowed in the sliding door, folding lounge chairs in the tailgate and a programmable diesel heating system. It’s a full four-berth from the start, too, and the better bed is the one in the roof. The rear seat is automotive quality and boasts fold-away head restraints. There’s an option to add a fifth, removable, travel seat, too. Volkswagen only offers the California Ocean with two choices of engine – the 150PS and 204PS – albeit along with a range of DSG automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel driving configurations. Ausgangssituation Wir hatten seit vielen Jahren unseren geliebten VW T5 California und suchten einen passenden Diesel Nachfolger mit Euro 6 Norm, um damit hoffentlich auch zukünftig in größere Städte fahren zu können. Letzte Woche dann ein Beitrag im Spiegel, das VW die Auslieferung des VW T6 gestoppt hat, weil die Stickoxidwerte zu hoch sind. Kein gutes Vorzeichen, aber angeblich kann es mit einem Softwareupdate behoben werden. Vielleicht wäre der Mercedes Marco Polo oder der Marco Polo Horizon doch die bessere Wahl. Der Konzern stand mit solchen Themen zumindest noch nie im Rampenlicht. Die Küchenzeile kommt im Marco Polo sehr edel daher. In Kombination mit den Schiffsdiehlen als Bodenbelag und der indirekten Beleuchtung geht das schon fast Richtung Glamping. Wir sind zwei Erwachse nicht besonders groß (unter 180 cm;), mit unseren zwei Kindern aktuell 8 und 9 Jahre alt und unserem Hund Lenny. Wir haben nur ein Auto und leben stadtnah und besuchen auch gern im Urlaub Städte, so dass ein Tiefgaragen taugliches Fahrzeug fast ein muss für uns ist. Was spricht für ein fahrendes Hotel VW California Ganz einfach – der Komfort. Das haben wir in unseren California zumindest sehr geschätzt. Denn die gut 30 cm breiten Küchenzeile ist eigentlich auch der größte Unterschied zwischen den California Modellen. Dieser Einbau ermöglicht das Abwaschen in einem kleinen Spülbecken, das 2-flammige Kochen auf einem Gasherd und beherbergt den 42 Liter großen Kompressor Kühlschrank. Entspannt zu zweit kochen und den Abend genießen. Der weitere Platz von dem Möbel wird noch für die zweite Batterie, den Frisch- und Abwassertank und die Gasversorgung geschickt genutzt. Alles was jetzt noch übrig bleibt, ist Stauraum. Damit kann man schon was Anfang, auch als 4-köpfige Familie mit Hund. Blick in den Kompressor Kühlschrank vom Hotel California. Der California Coast und Ocean warten aber noch mit zusätzlichem Stauraum auf. Denn die zweier Sitzbank zum Umklappen hat eine riesige Schublade, die für den gesamten Proviant verwendet werden kann. Echt genial, auch wenn dadurch keine größeren Gegenstände wie Snowboards durchgeladen werden können. Im hinteren oberen Bereich befindet sich ein weiterer Stauraum, der meistens für die gesamten Klamotten unserer Kinder (in den Sommerurlauben) ausreichen musste. Ein zusätzlicher kleiner Tisch kann zudem noch neben der Sitzbank vorgeschoben und ausgeklappt werden. Wobei der von der Größe zu viert schon recht klein ist, aber für ein Frühstück mit Müsli und Kaffee noch funktioniert. Für ein gemütliches Frühstück zu viert ist der Tisch einfach zu klein. Hinten sind noch die zusätzlichen Fächer für den Stauraum zu sehen. Beim California Ocean ist das Aufstelldach zudem noch elektrisch. Die Gefahr, dass die irgendwann nicht mehr schließt ist natürlich immer da, aber das Dach kann wohl auch manuell geschlossen werden. Nach 8 Jahren mussten wir zudem die Hydraulikpumpe für mehrere hundert Euro tauschen lassen. Durch die Ausstattung kann ohne großes beladen sofort in den Urlaub oder in das Wochenende gestartet werden und alles ist dabei – das nenne ich Freiheit. Die Modelle sind aus unserer Sicht nicht flexibel genug. Standardmäßig können nur 4 Personen mitfahren. Die Küchenzeile nimmt jedoch auch bei Transporten wie Umzügen einfach zu viel Platz weg. Die Rücksitzbank ist so schwer, dass Sie praktisch nicht alleine ausgebaut werden kann (bei Einzelsitzen verhält es sich ähnlich). Wir sind im Schnitt wahrscheinlich 2 Monate im Jahr Campen, das sind gerade mal 16,6 %. Im Alltag wird der Bus jedoch täglich, also 83,3 % der Zeit genutzt. Für uns sind im Alltag immer mal wieder 6 Sitze sinnvoll, um auch mal ein paar Freunde oder die Eltern mitnehmen zu können, wenn man schon einen Bus hat sollte das doch das mindeste sein, oder? Dann haben wir auch noch das Thema Preis. Ja die Modelle sind alle sehr teuer und unterscheiden sich auch nur geringfügig von dem Mercedes Marco Polo.
